In Elizabethan England, Iberian chivalric romances became accessible to readers thanks to the meticulous work of translators, who not only rendered their sources into English but also adapted them to the sociocultural context of the period. This article compares one of those renderings, Anthony Munday’s The Second Book of Primaleon of Greece, with its intermediate French source, focusing on excerpts where Munday’s appropriative translation strategies—amplification, modification, and selective omission—are manifest. These strategies enabled him to produce a fully English text that conforms to Elizabethan linguistic conventions while preserving essential narrative and stylistic features of the original. The study highlights how Munday’s textual mediation contributed to the enrichment of English language and literary culture at the end of the Elizabethan period.
