Luis Sepúlveda’s short stories (Chile, 1949–Spain 2020) and Andrea Jeftanovic's chronicles (Chile 1970)— published respectively in Historias de aquí y de allá (2010) and Destinos errantes (2016)—reflect aspects of the past of two writers who experienced, under different conditions, the September 11, 1973 coup d’éat and the dictatorship years of Augusto Pinochet. Although the authors do not belong to the same generation, their chronicles testify to common bonds connecting Chilean territories with peripheral zones of power, both within and beyond Latin America. Both works bear the traces and scars of a social fracture that severed Chile’s before and after, its past and present. This study aims to explore the core of these texts, the records and testimonies they contain, to ultimately reflect on displacement, territorial movement, and the symbolic power of literary cartography. It addresses questions extending from social trauma and memory to the return to lands that are no longer the same. Grounded in the theories of spatiality and territoriality, this analysis focuses strictly on the chronicle corpus within the literary field. In conclusion, the perspectives of the two writers as they traverse times and places become a compass that guides interdisciplinary research that records the traces of the past while simultaneously dialoguing with historical memory and social identity.
