This article introduces the category of “spectral testimonies” to examine a new testimonial mode in the Southern Cone that brings together the paradigms of denunciation, mediation, and the affective turn. The theoretical framework studies on spectrality (Avery Gordon, Jacques Derrida, Vinciane Despret) to understand how dictatorial terror and its memory persist in the present and indicate unfinished tasks of care that go beyond the accumulation of evidence. The article’s hypothesis is that, in the face of temporal distance, the current stalling of justice, the saturation or insufficiency of the archive, and tensions surrounding memorial sites, certain aesthetic and performative practices reorganize the ways of listening and reframe the conditions of transmission, turning remains, voids, and traces into public interpellations.
The corpus consists of the performance Antivisita. Formas de entrar y salir de la ESMA (2022), by Mariana Eva Pérez and Laura Kalauz, and Manuela Aldabe’s photographic and installation work connected to Planeta azul (2021), including cyanotype series made with materials discarded by forensic investigations. Through a comparative analysis, the article shows how these works introduce a spectral turn in testimony to draw attention to the paradox of enforced disappearance and to activate the ethical and social responsibility of its memory in those who attend or observe. In this way, “spectral testimonies” can sustain transmission where institutional supports of memory prove insufficient and where what remains unresolved returns to demand a response.
