This article studies the configuration of the lieder in Simbólicas (1911), the first book by José María Eguren (Lima, 1874-1942). It examines the style and strategies of composition and thematic progression, as well as their metapoetic character, all of which ensure their musicality — that is, the emotive expression that resists explanatory and narrative discourses. The article considers the literary models of the period that shape the tradition in which these texts are inscribed, paying attention to the development of the lied in Hispanic literature. It will be shown that Eguren's lied is the affirmation of an aesthetic preference and a liminal and experimental realm where image, sound, and emotion harmonize, and conventional structures dissolve.
