This article focuses on the analysis of the concepts of creation and invention in literary Realism and Naturalism. Its aim is to differentiate these terms and examine how these movements, as manifestations of Modernity, conceive of literary creation as the imitation of an object subject to criteria of truth. Through conceptual analysis and a comparative study with Romanticism and Christian thought, the study reveals that Realism and Naturalism substitute Truth for God, guided by the scientific method. It concludes that these movements prioritize truth and, consequently, rhetorical teaching (docere) as a functionally dominant element in literary works, grounding their works in the observation of the physical world as the source of truth.
