Argentina
This article aims to analyze a set of texts from Argentine literature and the periodical press that focus on scenarios and practices associated with the meatpacking industry. The object of study includes materials from newspapers and magazines of various kinds, as well as three early novels about meatpacking plants: El matadero by Ismael Moreno (1921), Historia de arrabal by Manuel Gálvez (1922), and Los charcos rojos by Bernardo González Arrili (1927). Beyond a comparative analysis of the meanings and figurations of the industry constructed by each of these texts, this study also seeks to identify continuities and contrasts between these fictions of meat produced by Argentine culture in the twentieth century and those characteristic of the nineteenth century, whose most emblematic expression is “El matadero” by Esteban Echeverría.
