This article presents an analysis of the Galician productionRelato para un incendio (aAntena, 2022), focussed on dramaturgical and character construction strategies. In this play, in the mode of verbatimtheatre, author Ernesto Is incorporates disruptive stage tools and inter-weaves various documentary sources to prompt reflection. The photo-graphs and recordings gathered by anthropologist Gustav Henningsen during his field work in the 1960s were crucial in the creation of the text. Through careful examination of reflexive documents facilitated by the actors and the director, I will demonstrate how these ethnographic documents were also instrumental to the process of dramaturgical cre-ation and, in particular, to character construction, in order to face eth-ical tensions around the representation of real people and events, one of the key concerns in documentary theatre practice.
