This paper analyses the role of linguistics in the origin and evolution of Artificial Intelligence (AI). It reviews the main milestones of AI, from the initial symbolic approaches to the current predominance of transformer based models of so called Generative Artificial Intelligence and aligns them with the linguistic postulates of the moment. The study investigates how linguistic theories have influenced the formalisation of language and the design of natural language processing systems. It also examines the empiricist shift motivated by the problem of knowledge acquisition, that led to the rise of statistical and machine learning approaches. Finally, it reflects on the current relevance of linguistics in a context dominated by generative artificial intelligence, highlighting its contribution in areas such as resource creation, interpretability, and the processing of languages with few resources.
