The aim of this article is to examine the way in which Cuerpo Ca(z)a (1985), by María Auxiliadora Álvarez, explores the concept of abjection, as proposed by Julia Kristeva, both thematically and linguistically. It will show how the use of metaphors linked to the bodily, the fluid, and the animal, together with the continuous disruption of poetic language, constitute elements that connect this book to the notion of the abject in its bodily, psychic, and aesthetic dimensions. The first section will focus on the representation of the maternal body and its relation to the humoral model of the body in premodern medicine. It will examine how, by emphasizing its bodily, porous, and expansive nature, this book establishes a link between the maternal body and the notions of the grotesque body, animality, and female monstrosity. The second section will address the notion of abjection understood as psychic rupture, namely, the process of mother-child separation and the consequent individuation of the subject. This section will examine the connection between the maternal body, the semiotic chora, and poetic language, as proposed by Kristeva and as it appears in Cuerpo Ca(z)a. Through the use of semantic and formal strategies—such as fragmentation or the disruption of grammatical norms and prosody—Álvarez’s aesthetic project aligns with the so-called «return of the real» (Foster, 1996): an interest in trauma, disgust, and obscenity present in contemporary visual arts.
