The Moroccan nation and its culture have played a significant and sustained role in the construction of the Spanish literary imaginary, particularly in relation to the military confrontations between Spanish and Moroccan forces. Three notable works engage directly with the Rif War (1921-1927): Annual (1922) by Eduardo Ortega y Gasset, El blocao. Novela de la guerra marroquí (1928) by José Díaz Fernández, and Imán (1930) by Ramon J. Sender. The catastrophe os Annual, alongside the strategic and logistical disarray and the material precariousness of the Spanish troops, serves to expose the political and moral fragility of a system rooted in the systemic marginalization of the disenfranchised, who formed the backbone of the Spanish army. Juan Goytisolo´s intervention signifies a critical reserval of the traditional paradigm of antagonism that has historically opposed the Spanish cultural model to Morocco and the Arab world. His literary project is grounded in an appropriation of the marginalized culture of the Arab "Other", undertaken with the aim of displacing the insularity and repressivetendencies embedded within Spanish cultural history. By deploying African and Arab marginality as a hermeneutic lens for the re-evaluation of national history, Goytisolo facilitatesthe emergence of a novel interpretive framework through which that history may be interrogated.
