Reading and writing stance, or the use of evaluative language for stancetak-ing in academic and scientific genres, is challenging. Stance has been the-orized and operationalized in many ways but has received relatively little attention in Spanish-focused system-ic-functional linguistics (sfl) studies. This paper intends to integrate two ways of looking at stance to the sflarchitecture. These two approaches, which I call position and posture, are compatible with appraisal theory and complement the construct of stance in this theory. The paper models stance, position, and posture within the per-spective system. Position relates to the presence or absence of explicit or implicit ties between evaluation and authorial subjectivity. Posture con-sists of taking an assertive or tentative orientation toward propositions. Both constructs are illustrated with analyses of sections of economics research ar-ticles. Some pedagogical implications and possible directions for future re-search are discussed.
