This article analyzes the video game “The Red Strings Club” (Deconstructeam, 2018) from a critical perspective focused on the transhumanist debate and the especificities of the videogame medium. The game depicts a near future in which technological implants allow for the modification and regulation of human emotions, closely connected to discourses on well-being, control, and happiness. Drawing on a theoretical framework that integrates game studies and transhumanist thought, the article examines how the game’s mechanics, interactivity, and narrative construct a reflective experience grounded in complex ethical dilemmas. It argues that the game generates significant tension between the videogame mission imposed on the player—preventing the implementation of emotional control programs—and the game’s own mechanics, which require manipulating other characters’ behavior without their consent. This contradiction is interpreted as a critical device that problematizes techno-utopian discourses surrounding human enhancement. Furthermore, the article explores the representation of emotional implants as a transhumanist response to forms of distress arising from violence in contemporary digital environments and the involvement of AI in the management and leadership of transhumanist programs. Overall, the analysis demonstrates how the video game functions as a narrative and ethical laboratory for critically rehearsing transhumanist scenarios, highlighting both their emancipatory potential and their political and social risks.
