Sor Juana's villancicos to St. Catherine of Alexandria have been studied from several perspectives but not in the context of other accounts of the saint. The villancicos belong to a small sub-set of redactions of the story of the saint which feature extensive rose imagery and are remarkably similar to a play written by Sor Juanas biographer, the Spanish Jesuit Diego Calleja. The Mexican nun and the Spanish priest celebrate the saint's triumph in public debate and hail her as a patron of learning.
