After an analysis of The Affable Hangman, it is possible for us to dis-tinguish three different kinds of fundamental components in the book: the autobiographical comporient; the previous works by the author; and the inclu-sien of his own readings in the novel both in an apparent way -as in the case of Saputo and Molinos- and as underlying elements -like Gracián and Dostoyevskí-. In additíon to the usual external ínterpretafion of the work as an autobiography, we propose a reading in which the writer faces the topic of evil through the character of the hangman, who, in spite of incorporating some external features, is above all a review of the personal spiritual and literary ¡ti-nerary of the author.
