There are few studies dedicated to review the private letter in its configuration as a gender or type of discourse; most of the studies only refer to partial aspects that have to do strictly with the specific corpus of the letters under examination. In this text a set of characteristic features of the private letter as discourse are reviewed and systematized, features that do not intend to exhaust the object nor state an all-embracing definition, but that, as a whole allow us to see the private letter as a discursive practice, and at the same time provide us with interesting elements to be applied to the analysis of actual letters.
