Ergativity as a concept has appeared in a relatively recent form in the main contemporary grammatical approaches. In fact, the same term has undergone evolutionary changes in its interpretation. In this study, as a part of a broader project (Fondecyt 1020786), some general aspects with respect to this concept are investigated comparatively from four grammar theories (traditional, generative, descriptive and systemic functional) and a critic to the systemic functional conception of ergativity is developed. A new conception of the term is proposed that takes to operate this concept. For this purpose, it is showed with some examples of the project's corpus, how it is possible to assign a gradual value of ergativity to different textual fragments. In the conclusion, some of the practical and theoretical projections of this work are presented along with its potential utility for textual analysis.
