This paper outlines and exemplifies the perspective on genre analysis developed by the so-called 'Sydney School'. It begins with a brief historical survey of the development of this approach, and then illustrates it in relation to some analysis of a museum text on Amerindian blanket weaving. To being the issue of distinguishing one genre from another in relation to the linguistic choices that configure them is addressed; subsequently, the question of texts that draw on more than one genre is considered. The main aim of the paper is to develop a functional linguistic orientation to genres as configurations of meaning, and the complementarity of typological and topological perspectives on genre relations.
