The twenty tides which constimte the first two series of Galdós's National Episodes present the historical events which took place in Spain between 1804 and 1833, a reference point which is closely linked to the plots in the novéis. In this extensive narrative work, the female characters do not tend to occupy central roles in the story; however, in this principally masculine world, the novelist has been able to créate some unforgettable heroines. This paper intends to analyse the narratives which Galdós has used to shape some of the female characters which appear in his first historical novels.
