En el artículo se abordan las relaciones entre el texto literario de la novela de Pereda Al primer vuelo [1891] y las ilustraciones que acompañaron a su primera edición, obra del dibujante barcelonés Apeles Mestres, autor también de la ilustración con la que se había ornamentado otra novela del escritor cántabro, El sabor de la tierruca (1882). Aparte del interés estético de esta primera edición (algunos de cuyos mejores grabados se reproducen en el artículo) el análisis de las ilustraciones revela ciertos condicionamientos literarios en la elaboración del texto novelesco de los que tenemos noticia por diversos epistolarios peredianos, permite estudiar la relación entre el lenguaje literario y el icónico, y tuvo además una importante repercusión en la prensa y en la crítica de su momento.
This paper deals with the relationship between the illustrations and the text in the first edition of Al primer vuelo [1891], a novel by José María de Pereda. These illustrations were made by Apeles Mestres, an artist from Barcelona, who had made the same work ten years before for El sabor de la tierruca, other novel by the spanish writer. Besides the great esthetic interest of this first edition (some of the best pictures are shown in this work), it is a very interesting issue to explain both the concurrency in the elaboration of the graphic and the literary texts, and the opinion about the illustrations, which can be found in the letters that Pereda sent to the editor of the novel. The work presented also reviews the critiques that the contemporary press made about the quality of the Apeles' work.
