Este artículo se basa en la noción de lo Real de Lacan, aquello que se resiste a la simbolización, un 'vacío-en-el-conocimiento' que subvierte cualquier pretensión de conocerlo. Exploro cómo Los olvidados de Luis Buñuel (1950), una película interpretada normalmente como un documental realista sobre la miseria en el contexto histórico mexicano asociado con el empuje traumático y acelerado hacia una economía industrial moderna que caracterizó la administración de Miguel Alemán (1946-52), puede ser leída de una forma que va más allá de la semiótica convencional para proponer una crítica del realismo, o de lo que se define como realismo dentro del orden hegemónico de nuestra cultura, produciendo, por tanto, una trasgresión del significado simbólico. Este artículo utiliza un análisis textual barthesiano, el cual se caracteriza por extraer un fragmento de la totalidad. Este análisis textual emascula la totalidad coherente de la estructura narrativa y re-introduce la imagen fija, el fotograma, el índice, el secreto reprimido del cine, el cual se oculta mediante una ilusión que anima mecánicamente los marcos inanimados de su origen. El fragmento se abre hacia nuevas especies de relaciones y revelaciones, las cuales traen de vuelta lo ominoso al cine. Finalmente, este artículo intenta crear una tensión interpretativa entre la asociación de la cinta de Buñuel con una preocupación por la documentación realista de los problemas sociopolíticos del contexto en el que el filme se inserta y con un discurso autoreflexivo sobre la propia representación cinematográfica y la percepción de la experiencia estética, enfatizando una relación o experiencia disruptiva y visceral en el encuentro fenomenológico entre el espectador y el filme. Propongo que dicho encuentro fenomenológico puede ser basado no tanto en una mirada contemplativa, sino en un puro afecto corporal y, sin embargo, al mismo tiempo, hay casi una disolución eufórica, donde la absorción en el filme involucra, constantemente, una sensación mutante.
This paper draws on Lacan's notion of the Real, that which resists symbolization, a gap-in-knowledge that subverts the presumption to know it. I explore how Bunuel's Los olvidados (1950), a film that is often interpreted as a realistic documentation of misery in the Mexican historical context of the traumatic, accelerated push towards a modern industrial economy that characterized Mexico in the late 1940s and early 1950s, can be read in a way that goes beyond conventional semiotics in order to propose that, as Pierre Sorlin formulates, the real cannot be directly apprehended. The contiguity with the real implies an imaginary re-translation of it. More importantly, my reading of the film proposes a critique of realism, or of what passes for realism within our culture's hegemonic order, producing, thus, a transgressive exemption from symbolic meaning. Using a Barthesian textual analysis that is characterized by extracting a fragment from the whole, which emasculates the coherent whole of narrative structure and opens it up to new kinds of relations and revelations (the cinematic punctum), my paper argues that Bunuel's film strives to capture a kind of Real that goes beyond the referential sign, beyond the documentation of real issues and conventions of verisimilitude in the cinema, recovering, thus, the heterogeneous within the homogeneous idea of reason. Finally, my paper explores how Bunuel's film is less concerned with a realistic documentation of socio-political concerns than with a self-reflexive discourse about cinematic representation and perception, emphasizing a visceral and disruptive relation or experience in the phenomenological encounter between the spectator and the film. I argue that this phenomenological encounter may be based on pure bodily affect and yet at the same time there is almost a euphoric dissolution, where the absorption in the film involves constantly shifting sensation.
