Manuel de Larramendi's contribution to the study of Basque prosody has been largely ignored or misinterpreted. In this paper, I review Larramendi's work in this area showing that, by and large, his description coincides fairly well with what we now know about dialects with prosodic systems of the Western type. Larramendi provided us with the first detailed and accurate description of the fairly complex accentual system of Western Basque and deserves the honor of being recognized as a pioneer in this field.
