This article attempts to study the metodological possibilities which focalization, at the different levels distinguished by Uspenski in A Poetics of Composition, offers in the analysis of prose. Our hypothesis is that the phraseological level is not a level of analysis but a level of convergency of the other levels; hence, it is not a metadiscoursive level but a discoursive one. This convergency, which is named focalization, is analyzed as pattern of a text of Valle Inclán's Sonata de Otoño. Finally, relations between focalization and ideology are presented.
