The same as in all germanic languages, the Old English language shows a clear tendency to situate the verb, being this auxiliar or lexical verb, at the end of the sentence (VF). Yet, from an historic point of view, the progressive movement of the verb towards the second position (V2) could be observed since the Old English period, specially in those main sentences which precede the subordinate clauses (T. VENNEMAN 1981: 627-636; R. HOGG 2002: 90-91). Therefore,in the case of auxiliar verbs, the order in which appears the verbs is auxiliar verb + main verb characteristic of the main sentences while the order main verb + auxiliar verb is chacteristic of the subordinate clauses. Hence, the objectives of this research are: on the one hand to obtain quantitative data about the use of the auxiliar verbs - cunnan & magan in Old English; and on the other hand to test if the possible variations of verb order are consequences of an interdialectal use or a stylistic choice of the author. The Helsinki Corpus of English Texts: Diachronic and Dialectal was used in the diachronic study to analyze the order of verbs.
