The adverb class has traditionally -and unnecessarily- been considered a heterogeneous one. This issue has by no means been settled. As possible ways round the problem studies have to be carried out on specific groups of units traditionally classified as adverbs, with the purpose of studying whether such units are adverbs, or, on the contrary, whether they form a new type of category. The present study centres on one of these small groups of units, the so-called "focalizers", and, specifically, on the word even (and the Spanish incluso). In the first part, we will briefly overview the main proposals made about the categorial status of even (on the one hand, some authors defend an adverbial definition of even, and on the other it has been claimed that even and the rest of focalizers constitute a new grammatical category). Finally, we will offer a critical review of these perspectives.
