The purpose of this article is to discuss various problems relating to impersonal verbal constructions with a view to:
1. Defining the impersonal sentence in French and Romanian on the basis of its subjectless nature and highlighting the viewpoints of different authors on this matter;
2. Offering a synthesis of the different clause types in order to establish a typology of verbs and impersonal constructions in the two languages;
3. Undertaking a short two-way contrastive analysis, showing areas of structural similarity and difference in impersonal expressions (French- Romanian, Romanian- French).
This procedure has enabled us to identify three basic situations, namely: convergence (impersonal construction in both languages) and either total or partial divergence (impersonal construction in one language and personal construction in the other).
