In the last few years, numerous researchers have tried to prove that gender, understood as a social construct, influences the way women and men acquire and use language. The present paper intends to review the literature on gender and first and second language acquisition and show the inappropriateness of those studies which did not take into account the fluid character of gender. This is done by referring to women and men acquiring a language both in a natural context and under formal instruction.
