In the absence of narratives on pregnancy, giving birth and "puerperium", the fictional narrator-protagonist of Lucía Etxebarria's "Un milagro en equilibrio" decides to follow in the footsteps of Carme Riera, the only other woman author in Spain who has dared to write about this particular experience of womanhood in her "Tiempo de espera" (1998). This essay addresses Etxebarria's novel vis-à-vis Riera's text to evaluate issues of representation and self-articulation in relation to pregnancy, giving birth, motherhood, writing, and the anxiety of authorship.
