The aim in this study is to analyze the novel Memorial do Convento (1982), work which belongs to the first period of the novelistic production by José Saramago, which one is characterized for problematizing the interpretation of the official history. We intend to analyze the way how Saramago builds the narrative and represents the characters while he mixes real facts to created ones, its the case of king D. João V, D. Maria Ana Josefa and Bartolomeu Lourenço de Gusmão, with the mysterious Blimunda and the worker and former combatants of war, Baltasar. Moreover, we seek to verify how José Saramago gives voice to socially marginalized people who were seldom contemplated by literature while he builds his narrative. Saramago offers to his readers another interpretation angle of the stories told. In Memorial do Convento, the king appears like somebody who makes an inverse role to the one that might be his obligation, in other words, instead of thinking of the populations welfare and make use of the riches to do it, he oppresses the people to supply a necessity which goes beyond his vanity: the construction of the Mafras Convent
