Between the live and tell. In the aesthetic and ideological project of literary transculturation in Latin America one can find the Mexican writer Juan Rulfo, considered one of the greatest Latin American writers of his time. He wrote few works, but his texts have attracted the attention of many critics for the richness and aesthetic composition of his writing. Juan Rulfos style is presented as a mirror of the Latin American cultural context, as the author builds his characters from the collection of stories and legends, from which he observes and leads the reader to observe beliefs created by, and preserved for, generations. Sudden changes in the focus and narrative time observed in Rulfos narrative seem to be associated with plays of images, which are sometimes concealed and sometimes revealed in the memory of the character Juan Preciado, retrieving a history from the past in the consciousness of a present time. This text aims at discussing to which extent the work Pedro Páramo (1955), by Juan Rulfo, is built according to the features of Latin American contemporary narrative and includes a social memory. In a metaphorical way, the work of Pedro Páramo represents the history of peoples silenced in their culture in the Latin American context, and who are slowly becoming aware of that history
