Al hablar del uso del presente con valor de pasado, se centra la atención en la equivalencia de la forma presente con un pretérito indefinido y se etiqueta como �presente histórico�. Pero el uso del presente para hacer referencia a hechos del pasado no se limita al conocido �presente histórico�:
aparece en otros casos. Además, no solo el presente incorpora tal valor designativo: afecta a otras formas en correlación temporal. Por otro lado, tampoco el presente con referencia a hechos pasados es equivalente solo a un indefinido, forna esencial de la narración de hechos pasados o �históricos�, sino que puede expresar diferentes variantes significativas presentando, en alguna de ellas, imposibilidad de alternancia con el indefinido, y expresando acción no cumplida, tal y como se refleja en estructura condicionales no reales y en estructuras independientes contextualizadas por ciertos adverbios o expresiones adverbiales.
To talk about the use of the present with a past value focuses the attention on the equivalence of the present form with a simple past and is given the label historic present. However, the use of the present to refer to events in the past is not limited to the so called historic present: we find it in other cases.
Moreover, not only does the present incorporate such a value: it also affects other forms in temporal correlation. On the other hand, the present with reference to past events is not only equivalent to a simple past, the main form used in the narration of past or �historic� events. It is also capable of expressing different significant variants presenting in some of them the impossibility of alternating with the simple past and expressing actions which never happened, as is seen in unreal conditional structures and in independent structures contextualised by certain adverbs or adverbial expressions.
