The topic of this paper is idioms which exist in a large number of European languages (and beyond) in a similar lexical structure and in the same figurative core meaning. We first look at the most widespread idioms (spread across 55-65 European languages) and discuss the reasons for the wide spread. The next idioms discussed here belong to the oldest layers that constitute the Lexicon of Common Figurative Units, i.e. idioms originating in antiquity, in the Bible and various ancient sources.
