This article traces the history of Fonseca and Ulloa families from the 2nd half of the 15th century until the early 17th century. It focuses on D. Antonio de Fonseca and his wives, especially Isabel Freire (the alleged inspiration for the figure of the shepherdess Elisa in Garcilaso´s poems). It proves that during her married life she lived in Toro (Zamora), her three surviving children were born there, and she died in that city.
