Defined since its origins as a descriptive, not a prescriptive science, linguistics has always ignored, and even looked down on, the criteria of correctness in speech. However these have not disappeared and even less lost their influence on every speaker of the language, as well as on some institutions. They continue to be systematically esteemed in the normative grammar and they are transformed into rigorous criteria in every school manual. This paper reviews the first results from a questionnaire about what is considered speaking well, given to 50 speakers of different occupations in Mérida.
