Está ampliamente aceptado en casi todas las gramáticas históricas del ibero-romance que los testimonios que han permanecido del pretérito de la segunda y tercera conjugaciones del latín no es un reflejo directo de las formas latinas, sino más bien una creación romance formada sobre el modelo de las formas pretéritas de DARE. Aunque el autor no pone en duda que en ibero-romance el verbo DARE podría haber actuado como modelo sobre el que se formaron los pretéritos débiles de los verbos en -er, me gustaría sugerir que no era el único modelo disponible y, de hecho, no fue el que tuvo más éxito en el centro y oeste de la Península Ibérica. La hipótesis que se presenta es que paralelamente a cualquier pretérito posible del modelo DARE con la vocal temática [?],también existía otro modelo para los pretéritos débiles de los verbos en -er con la vocal temática [e], creado por medio de analogía con los pretéritos débiles de las otras dos conjugaciones con vocales temáticas en [a] e [i]. This paper deals with the evolution of the pretérito y tiempos afines in Ibero-Romance. It is widely accepted in almost all Ibero-Romance historical grammars that the preterite for the continuants of the Latin second and third conjugations are not a direct reflex of the Latin forms but rather a Romance creation formed on the model of the preterite forms of DARE 'to give'. Whilst I do not doubt that, in Ibero-Romance, the verb DARE could have acted as a model upon which to form weak preterites for -er verbs, I would like to suggest that it was not the only model available and, in fact, it was not the most successful one in the central and western Iberian Peninsula. My hypothesis is that alongside any possible preterites on the model of 'DARE' with the thematic vowel [?] there also existed another model for the weak preterite of -er verbs with the thematic vowel [e], created through analogy with the weak preterites of the other two conjugations with thematic vowels in [a] and [i].
