Using anthropological and ethnological works on the cultural region of El Gran Nayar (part of the Mexican states of Durango, Jalisco, Nayarit and Zacatecas), I analyse some important aspects of the novel Nayar, inspired by the life of the Coras and the Huicholes, two of the four human groups that form part of this cultural region. The scrutinizing of the work and powers of two key characters makes it possible to identify them as representatives of cults that, at least until the writing of the novel, have been considered opposites: the cults of peyote and kieri. The study of the contradictory mythical-social relationship that is born of this opposition makes it possible to fully understand the novel's denouement. Hence, the wealth of ethnological and anthropological material used not only has a didactic dimension but also contributes to the construction of the plot
