El humor en la literatura árabe se conoce desde la época pre-islámica. Al-Yahiz, de la época 'abbasí, es el pionero en analizar y clasificar el humor y dedicarle epístolas, capítulos de libros y libros enteros. La Maqama es un género literario que aparece en la época 'abbasí, y su inventor es Badi al-Zaman al-Hamadani. Humor in Arabic literature is known since pre-Islamic period.
