The work of Rabelais is a veritable compendium of the Renaissance, riddled with interesting passages in which medicine plays an important role. Medicine is used for comical, serious, or intellectual effect, with the text frequently citing the great physicians of antiquity. Reading this work shows us a rich array of particularities of 16th century medicine. With regard to medical terminology, however, these passages present few difficulties other than the exceptions we point out.
