The aim of this paper is to show that the purpose of the didactics of literature is not only to teach but also to trigger a contagion. The didactics of literature, from its origins to present time, has been based on literary theory whose purpose is teaching literature. In this sense, theorists of the didactics of literature have followed the most influential and wide spread literary theories in order to teach literature. On the other hand, the theory of teaching by literary contagion, built upon the successful pedagogic experiences of the great writers, advocate for the transmission of literary passion in detriment of common teaching, since literature cannot be taught. Therefore and having in mind this conceptual context, the task of the literature teacher is to infectthe virus of literature in the aesthetic unconscious of the student.
