On the assumption that theta-roles correspond to designated hierarchical positions in syntax, this work shows that two classes of causers must be differentiated. Combining syntactic and semantic evidence taken from (a) result participles, (b) event nominalisations and (c) causative constructions we argue that there is a direct causer, lower than the position where agents are introduced, which must be temporary coextensive with the eventuality, and also an indirect causer, hierarchically higher than agents, which does not need to satisfy this temporal coextensiveness requisite
