Resumo: Partindo de uma breve contextualização da cena literária e da tradução no Brasil e na Argentina do século XIX, o artigo pretende fazer uma análise descritiva comparada das traduções que o imperador do Brasil, Dom Pedro II, e o presidente da Argentina, Bartolomé Mitre, fizeram do episódio do "Conde Ugolino" da Divina Comédia. Investigar-se-á as estratégias utilizadas por esses dois governantes autores e, ainda, verificar-se-á quais foram as suas motivações para traduzir Dante e se essas obras cumpriram alguma função na cultura brasileira e argentina à época. Abstract: Based on a brief background of the literature and translation scene in Brazil and Argentina in the nineteenth century, the purpose of this article is to make a comparative descriptive analysis of the translations that the emperor of Brazil, Dom Pedro II, and the presidente of Argentina, Bartolomé Mitre, did of the "Count Ugolino" episode of the Divine Comedy. The strategies used by these two rulers writers will be investigated and also will be verified which was their motivations to translate Dante and if these works met some function in Brazilian and Argentina cultures at the time. key-words: Dom Pedro II, Mitre, translation, descriptive analysis, Divine Comedy.
