Menéndez Pelayo también recorrerá tempranamente las principales bibliotecas de Portugal, Italia y Francia. Juan Valera and Marcelino Menéndez Pelayo, compulsive bibliophiles, exchanged during their lives numerous opinions about a very rich literary material. This bibliophilia would convey visiting and consulting the leading libraries in Europe and America. Valera had access to almost all the archives of the European and American National Libraries in his diplomatic journeys. Menéndez Pelayo also went early on to the main libraries in Portugal, Italy and France. His reflections expressed so much in his letters as in his judgements included in the literary magazines, show the multiplicity of intellectual interests: philosophy, history, aesthetic theory, translations and works of literary creation.
