Since the advent of grammars in Romance languages there has been a notable deficiency. The Spanish grammars for Italian learners and vice versa have been lacking. The few which have been issued were also done in a very late period. The prejudices surrounding the similarities between Spanish and Italian have traditionally created a misconception of simplicity for native speakers of either language learning the other. Numerous studies have proven that this cliché is actually wrong and have also shown that while it is easy to gain a basic level of knowledge, it is difficult to achieve a higher level of competence due to the language transfer. Italian learners of Spanish as a foreign language face several difficulties which dwell on phonological, lexical and syntax issues. As a teacher of Spanish as a foreign language, l have had the opportunity to assess how contrastive analysis can be really beneficial, particularly in identifying the most critical issues encompassing structural differences and similarities. Furthermore, it is possible to include all those topics that grammars conventionally do not take into account by using a holistic approach, and also to avoid wasting time on areas which prove repetitive and irrelevant. At the same time, the contrastive analysis can be a useful tool for a teacher as it complements the learning and self learning provided by technical support. In fact, all the grammar and lexical issues which are customarily dealt with solely through audiovisual materials can actually be more stringently tackled through contrastive analysis. To demonstrate this, this investigation will focus on the usage of the verb 'haber' as an auxiliary in opposition to the verb 'tener', and also as an impersonal verb in contrast to the verb 'estar'. It will additionally concentrate on the usage of 'haber' under various facets; as a legal term, in the construction of sentences, as an archaism in expressions such as 'he aquí' and 'he allí', in personal or impersonal 'perifrasis de obligacion', etc. The Italian learner can thereby use the contrastive approach as an important tool in dealing with interlinguistic similarities and by extension, utilizing it as a means of achieving a metalinguistic conscience.
