The overarching aim of the current study is to reevaluate the work of Peruvian poet Mariano Melgar in order to question the notion of Latin American romanticism and the literary canon. At the same time, it sets out to highlight the particularity of Melgar´s anachronistic role with relation to the understanding and conception of Latin American literature. To achieve these goals, this essay relies on the theoretical and analytical approaches of scholars such as Antonio Cornejo Polar, Roberto González Echevarría, and Andrew Bush, while analyzing the recently discovered civic and love poems “Ya llegó el dulce momento” and “Llegó el terrible momento.” Subsequently, it observes how these romantic tendencies are part of the poet´s work. Lastly, the image of Melgar as a mythical and historical figure, resulting from his involvement in the emancipation process, is analyzed critically, as is the degree to which this aspect of his persona may have overshadowed his literary work
