This paper presents a phonetic characterization of Basque seseo by means of theacoustic analysis of the bilingual corpus ESCA (Iribar & Isasi, 2008). The firstthree spectral peaks of the sibilant realizations of 15 informants are studied, both in Spanish (seseants and canonicals) and Basque. The work shows the acousticcharacteristics of the two types of sibilants found (dorsoalveolar [s] andapicoalveolar [s1] in both languages, as well as their inter and intralinguisticrelationship. The possible existence of two subtypes of apicoalveolar, more or lessretracted, is also suggested. In general, the phonetic realization of seseocorresponds to the realization of the dorsoalveolar // phoneme in Basque.
