In order to analyse the evolution of interpreter training at the University of Vigo over the last 20 years, covering 3 different curricula, following a brief review of the improvements in the facilities (specific laboratories), this paper provides a series of comparative calculations based on official quantitative data. Two types of analysis are presented: a comparison of interpreting with the other main thematic blocs (translation, languages and instrumental subjects); and a second tracing the evolution of the number of subjects and teaching hours devoted to interpreting, always distinguishing between compulsory and optional subjects. The data clearly indicate that interpreting’s marginal position has been exacerbated with each successive curricular change. In order to offset the shortcomings detected, the author makes a proposal geared to increasing flexibility regarding the range of optional subjects in order to harness the potential to convert the University of Vigo into an interpreting benchmark not only in the north of the Peninsula but in the whole of the Spanish State.
