The aim of this article is to bring a foucauldian understanding of power to confrontation with the power relations in la novela policiaca, to look at these detective novels as a sort of cultural practice, in which power and knowledge coincide, and that can generate an interpretation of the present Spanish fears and hopes. After some interpretation bases for a detective novel have been set, especially to determine the relations of this fiction with the world outside literature, the article is focused on the figure of the detective. The detective is the key figure of the whole genre and is most important to a detective novel interpretation. The construction of this figure in recent Spanish detective fiction is analyzed in the light of Foucault’s basic power theory: the repressive hypothesis and the biopolitics. The article also quotes the popular opinion on the critical attitude towards society that detective novel allegedly shows. The analysis performed demonstrates, however, that the social criticism works in detective novels as a tool of status quo affirmation which in fact strenghtens the power of state authority. There is no power clash, the detective novels just reinforce the existence of political authority
