This article talks about the limits laws have when changes occur in the linguistic performance. Mackey thinks that changes in the linguistic performance are determined by culture, demography, geography and politics, thus, we should relate it to social changes in general. The socio-linguistic mechanisms in the changes in the linguistic performance probably are: the linguistic performance depends on the relative capacity of the speakers and the relative capacity depends on the critical mass of the speakers in context. As far as these basic socio-linguistic mechanisms are effective, and only if this happens, should laws be a valid instrument for changes in the linguistic performance.
Legeek hizkuntza jokaera-aldaketan dituzten mugak aztertzen dira artikulu honetan. Hizkuntza jokaera-aldaketa kultura-, demografia-, geografia- eta politika-baldintzen pean dago Mackeyren ustez eta, beraz, gizarte-aldaketa orokorragoari lotu behar zaio. Hizkuntza jokaera-aldaketaren mekanismo soziolinguistikoak hauek lirateke: hizkuntza jokaera hiztunen gaitasun erlatiboaren araberakoa da eta gaitasun erlatiboa testuinguruko hiztunen masa kritikoaren araberakoa. Oinarrizko mekanismo soziolinguistiko horietan eragina duten heinean, eta orduan bakarrik, izango dira legeak hizkuntza jokaera-aldaketarako tresna.
