Language is a social phenomenon, similar to any other social phenomenon, which creates and suffers the contradictions of the society it belongs to. So, language reflects the conflicts of society. All languages, per se, have the same value and the same rigths. But in a country, like ours where there is a great deal of conflict and where collective and individual rigths are at cross purposes, the collective rigths that correspond to a linguistic community have the priority. Due to the fact that language reflects the power relations, the normalisation process of a language in a dominated country will eventually face the State. The power generally decides the lifespan of a language. And this is the case of the Basque language.
Hizkuntza gizarte-fenomeno bat da eta, beste edozein gizarte-fenomenoren antzera, bera kokaturik aurkitzen den gizartearen kontraesanak jasaten eta eragiten ditu. Hizkuntzak, bada, gizartearen gatazka-egoera isladatzen du. Hizkuntzak oro, berez, balio berekoak dira eta guztiek dituzte eskubide berberak. Baina gatazka-egoeran dagoen herri batean, kasurako gurean, hizkuntz eskubide indibidualak eta kolektiboak gurutzatzen direnean, lehenagokoak dira hizkuntz komunitateari dagozkion azken hauek. Hizkuntzak botere-harremanak isladatzen ditu, nazio menperatu baten hizkuntz normalkuntzak, azken batean, Estatuarekin topo egiten du. Hizkuntzaren bizia, gehienbat, botereak erabakitzen du. Hauxe da euskararen kasua.
