The main aim of this article is to present the discrepancies existing in the information provided by the colonial sources and concerning the Ahuianime, young dancers who accompanied the principal Aztec warriors in different religious and cultural contexts. The analysis is based on passages of the Aztec poetry which in a very subtle and metaphorical way describe the Ahuianime, focusing above all on their beauty and sensuality; and also on some Mexica myths and beliefs concerning the problem of the feminine sexuality, an area protected by the patron goddess of the Ahuianime, Xochiquetzal. On the other hand, the accounts of the Spanish missionaries were analysed, revealing a completely different point of view on the problem: most of the frairs strongly criticized the Ahuianime for their supposed “voluptuousness” and shameless public behaviour. However, it should be mentioned that even in the accounts that judge the Ahuianime most severly certain contradictions appear which questions the correctness of the interpretation of the author. On the basis on the information provided by the mentioned sources, the author tried to sketch out an objective image of the Ahuiani and to define her position in the Aztec society and in the Aztec ideological system.
