In this article we approach the Spanish romanticism and, particularly, the romantic vision of Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer in order to investigate the sense of loneliness in his Legends. We first present a panoramic overview of the notion of loneliness as a psychological phenomenon; then some examples of the notion of loneliness in Spanish literature; we analyze the importance of selected symptoms in the romantic texts in general, and finally we analyze the loneliness as a universal symptom of romanticism in Bécquer´s texts. Creating an imaginary world within his own loneliness, Bécquer fills it with fictional inhabitants that often appear overnight, linking real life with sleep and death, that is to say, with the existential mystery. Loneliness, which acquired its universality in the time of romanticism, is part not only of the previous texts, from the literary trend mentioned above, but also of those of the following era, becoming a useful tool for understanding existential "truth".
